עַל שְׁלוֹשָׁה דְּבָרִים

This artwork is based on a famous saying from Pirkei Avot, attributed to Shimon the Righteous: “The world stands on three things: Torah, the service of God, and deeds of kindness.”
Gabriel expands on his thoughts regarding this artwork: “I’ve been quite preoccupied with the trinity that Rabbi Shimon pointed out as the basis of the world. Alongside the literal meaning of his words, I felt there was another layer waiting to be discovered. After reading different interpretations of this verse from the Mishnah, I finally formed my own understanding of his statement.
In my eyes, Torah is symbolising language, or specifically the living Hebrew letters - those that, according to the Kabbalah, were instrumental in creating the world. The service of God depicts the cultural rituals that bring us together as a society. And finally, deeds of kindness are the essence of human interaction - the empathy and love that give everything else its meaning.
I’ve decided to symbolise this beautiful Jewish trinity in a circular form rather than the christian triangle, to emphasize that any of the three cannot exist without the other two: language cannot exist without social interactions and empathy; Social interactions will disintegrate without language and empathy; Empathy alone will be senseless if we don’t have meaningful others that are connected to us through language.
