אֶחָד מִי יוֹדֵעַ

Echad Mi Yodea is one of the most famous songs in the Haggadah - the book traditionally read by Jews on the eve of Passover. The song itself is cumulative - each verse culminates with the question: "who knows one?" which is then immediately answered with "I know one. One is our God, in heaven and on earth." The repetitive question at the song's title conjures up numerous philosophical and theological ideas. What has always caught my attention in the song was the insistence of the question. In this artwork, I've decided to delve into it. Using broad strokes of blue India ink for the word 'One', I aimed to express the apparent certitude of the answer. Across it, I used fast strokes of black ink to inscribe the outlasting question. By confronting the two layers against each other, I suggest a new reading: 'One! Who knows?’ .The question is dynamic, ever-changing, never to be appeased. To me, the persistence of the question is precisely that which defines my Jewishness.ֿ
